Traditionally, the Student Board representative for an academic year is selected during the University Student Government elections.
During last year's election Sheree King, a third year law student was victorious running against Robert Maxwell a second year law student, and UDC undergrad alum.
However, over the summer a technicality forced her to resign her position and second special election was called for.
The second election pitted Robert Maxwell against new challengers Dale Lyons and former University Student Body President William Kellibrew.
In order to familiarize potential voters with the new candidates two debates were held; the first in the Undergraduate Student Government office and the second in the law school. Colin Touhey coordinator for student outreach and debate society adviser moderated both debates.
The candidates all seemed knowledgeable about the issues with the student center, the university facility repairs, and student fees at the forefront of the debate.
When asked during the debates about the biggest priorities Robert Maxwell spoke to the need for unity amongst the various colleges in the undergraduate school as well as the graduate and law school.
William Kellibrew spoke at length about integrity and leadership noting his extensive leadership experience at the University.
After two days of voting Trustee-Elect Lyons was able to claim victory by a margin of almost 40 votes.
Operating in a shorter term due to the late nature of the special election Lyons immediately turned his eyes towards his new duties as student representative.
Mr. Lyons was sworn in during a special meeting of the Board of trustees in October.
