Tuesday, September 9, 2008, was a marvelous day for the University of the District of Columbia. Administrators, staff and students huddled together in the crowded Window's Lounge to get a glimpse of the new President of the university, Dr. Allen L. Sessoms. At the event students, faculty, and staff were able to shake hands, pose for photos and raised questions for the new leader on campus.
With a bright smile, a crisp clean suit and a dignified air, Dr. Sessoms approached the podium formally to introduce himself to those who attended his "Meet and Greet" forum. "I am deeply honored to accept the responsibility of becoming this great university's new President," said Dr. Sessoms with much excitement in his voice. Many in the audience, gave roars of applause as the new President spoke of change for the university, "I have come here to help this university become all that it can be. If we work together, administration, faculty and staff, I am sure that we will bring great change to UDC."
Dr. Sessoms enters the University of the District of Columbia with an extremely impressive resume. He has previously been the president of two universities; Delaware State University and Queen's College of New York City. Also, he has a Bachelor's degree from Union College, a Master's degree from the University of Washington, and a doctorate from the prestigious Yale University. With his education and success in managing urban, public higher educational institutions, many are confident that Dr. Sessoms will be able to advance the University. Some of his immediate goals include creating a community college within the university while enhancing the currently existing four year baccalaureate program, improving the University's infrastructure, and implementing a Campus Master Plan specifically focusing on a Student Center and finding a new facility for the David A. Clarke School of Law.
The UDC Board of Trustees obviously felt confident in their decision. Speaking at the ceremony Board of Trustees president James W. Dyke, Jr. said, "As many of you know we conducted an exhaustive, national, transparent search to look at a number of different people who would be best suited to move this university to its next level of excellence. Because although we're very proud of this university we're even prouder of what its going to be in the future."
