By Trilogy News - 'Online Director'Issue date: 9/22/08 Section: Features
Welcome to the University of the District of Columbia's academic year 2008-2009. We hope that you will be engaged in our activities and take notice of the flyers/posters with the dove on them this semester. The flyers/posters will be posted all around campus. They will contain information about some very prolific events for your growth and development beyond the classroom experience.
The Office of the President for Community Outreach and Involvement plans and executes the monthly Afternoon Dialogue and Distinguished Lecture Series in which the dove helps to promote this co-curricular program.
In the 2007-2008 academic year some of our speakers included, Mr. Anthony Browder, Cultural Historian, Rev. Al Sharpton, Civil Rights Activist, Mr. Ernie Green, Little Rock Nine, Mr. Robert Bobb, President, DC State Board of Education, Dr. Walter E. Fauntroy, former US Congressman for the District of Columbia, Mr. Vincent Gray, Chairman District of Columbia City Council, Ms. Maudeen Cooper, President and CEO Greater Washington Urban, Mr. Kwame Brown, DC Councilmember at large, and Mr. Edward A. Hailes, Jr., Esquire among others. We are also responsible for the 9/11 Remembrance and Constitution Day celebrations.
Our first speaker beginning in the fall was the International President for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc who will spoke on the topic of, "The Miseducation of Black Greeks. Our 9/11 Remembrance Celebration was held on September 11, 2008 on the Dennard Plaza with local ministers who shared prophetic wisdom from an ecumenical perspective.
Both series will be held once a month in building 44 A-03, with the Distinguished Lecture series on Thursdays and Afternoon Dialogue on Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. We are looking forward to a full compliment of speakers and topics to discuss beginning in the fall semester. Keep an eye watchful for the dove to let you know when the next program will be happening.
This component of the President's office not only provides forums to discuss different topics but it also works directly with other student organizations in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs. We began three new faith based discussion groups on campus during the 2007-2008 year with the assistance of Ms. Jennifer Merrill, who volunteers her time in the office. (Ms. Merrill came to UDC through a campus ministry organization called the CCO -Coalition for Christian Outreach)
The groups that were started were an afternoon Bible study on Thursdays at 12:30pm, an interfaith Spirituality discussion on Tuesdays at 12:30pm, and a Bible study for UDC athletes around 6pm on Thursdays in the gym. They will continue to be ongoing activities. We are looking forward to informative gatherings this fall semester and would like to see you at any or all of our programs. Please feel free to stop by our office which is located in building 38 A-03 or give us a call at 202-274-6098.
When you see the Dove this semester, know that something wonderful is happening on our campus. "To whom much is given, much is required", have a wonderful learning experience at the University of the District of Columbia. Stay encouraged!
