Words from the Undergraduate Student Government President
By Trilogy News - 'Online Director'Issue date: 9/22/08 Section: Features
It is an honor as well as a privilege to extend greetings to all first time and continuing students for the academic year 2008- 2009. If you didn't already know, the USGA has had a busy summer and we have accomplished many things throughout the summer, and now I would like to share my thoughts as we embark on a new academic year.
As all of you may know by now, The Board of Trustees has officially announced Dr Allen Sessoms as the new President of the University of the District of Columbia. This news comes at a great time as the University undergoes many changes in order to advance the overall operations of the University. Many of these changes were begun under Acting President Stanley Jackson.
Now as the new academic year begins, the Undergraduate Student Government Association moves forward in its plans to acquire more students to be involved in Campus Life. I am honored to have been entrusted with USGA as my team works together towards creating stronger relationships between students and their student leaders.
As I stated in the beginning of the election period, I have identified some areas that the USGA is going to focus on during my term as President. The first is the creation of a premier website that allows students to get in contact with their student leaders in order to find out what the USGA is doing and also to provide information that students want to know.
The second area the USGA wants to focus on is the Town Hall meetings. The purpose of having these town hall meetings is to inform the student population on what the student government is doing, having students voice their concerns, and to give students the opportunity to meet and interact with their student representatives.
Additionally, the USGA also wants to provide more opportunities for training seminars for student leaders, ensuring more knowledgeable student leaders that are well aware of their role as student leaders and the responsibilities as well as the challenges that come with it.
These goals will push the student involvement to the next level as the USGA continues to evolve. The USGA is here to serve the student population by creating programs, advocate on students' behalf and keep students in touch with what is happening on campus. We have come a long way in over 30-plus years but there is still room for growth. I invite you to stay engaged with the student government as we add to the rich history of the University, let us make this academic year the best it can possibly be.
