UDC students attended a fact-finding mission at the Newseum, located on Pennsylvania Avenue in NW DC. Professor Charles Butler, Mr. Clifton Young and Mr. Colin Touhey collaborated together to sponsor an exploratory group to find facts about the Newseum that will lead to a group trip in the fall for all interested students.
Professor Butler is the advisor to the student publications committee. In the interest of stimulating fresh ideas and approaches to the Yearbook and Trilogy Newspaper, Butler decided that a trip to the museum would be an ideal opportunity for students to learn about aspects of newsgathering that might enhance their own work.
After attending the opening day ceremony, it became apparent that the trip, with its many informative exhibits and displays, would be an awe-inspiring opportunity for UDC Publications Staff students. When the idea was run past Mr. Clifton Young, the Universities Staff Photographer, he was immediately on board for the trip, but the idea did not become a reality until the same inspiration came to Mr. Colin Touhey.
All three persons agreed on the need and the desire to go and Mr. Touhey took the initiative to arrange the logistical items leading up to the first trip. In order to ensure large student participation in the Fall, Mr. Touhey recommended that a fact-finding trip precede the actual large group venture. Following the trip, a group follow-up session will generate ideas that could be employed by UDC's Publication Staff.
Needless to say when the idea was presented to Dr. Borlandoe, acting Vice President for Student Affairs and Ms. Sandra M. Carter, Acting Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, the entire concept came to fruition. In addition to the trip, facilities and equipment will be made available to enhance and support a new and stronger effort for publications produced by students. The inspiration for this effort originated at an annual student retreat sponsored by Ms. Mary Roberts who has successfully put on these activities for many years. Ms. Beverly Gurley the Program coordinator for Student Activities responsible for student publications added her un-wavering support for the program plan as well.
The students that attended the preliminary session and the fact-finding effort not only were elated by the experience but have already begun the process of soliciting ideas and commitments from their fellow students to participate in the fall activities. According to a statement made by Dr. Borlandoe at the meeting of the Publications staff in August of this year, these are the kinds of activities and follow-up ventures that will lead to a successful publications effort and directly reflect the intent and desire of the Division of Student Affairs.
